Jon worked in the steel industry for 15 years. Although he graduated in Physics from Durham University, the majority of his previous experience has been in process and chemical engineering. Initially his work involved a number of research projects on high temperature iron and steel processes, later focussing on aspects of environmental control particularly materials recycling. He has particular expertise in agglomeration which first brought him into contact with MIRO through a collaborative project on recycling of foundry wastes. Jon worked at the University of Newcastle, School of Civil Engineering & Geosciences where his work included geochemical modelling, active and passive water treatment and mineral based research. He remains a guest member of staff at Newcastle University. |

Joining MIRO
in 2007, Alan graduated as a chemist and, after a period
of academic research in glass and ceramics, worked as a
materials scientist in the construction industry,
specialising in cement chemistry and concrete
technology. He has managed EU Framework Programme
research projects and acted as an Environmental Site
Manager on a major tunnelling contract of the Channel
Tunnel Rail Link. He is a Visiting Professor in Environmental Technology at the Centre for Contaminated Land Remediation at the University of Greenwich, and a Senior Research Fellow in the Centre for CO2 Technology in the Department of Chemical Engineering, University College London, where he has introduced two projects aiming at substantially reducing energy requirements and emissions in chemical manufacturing processes. Mark has been involved with MIRO projects for over ten years. Originally a geology and materials graduate, he further studied radiochemistry and completed a Ph.D. in cements chemistry. His interests are two fold; the use of geomaterials in environmental protection, principally for containment structures and waste encapsulation and secondly, in resource efficiency. These areas involve a range of novel technologies such as ultrasonic's, electrokinetics and molten salts methods applied over a wide range of materials. Previously, Mark has worked for the British Geological Survey, W.S. Atkins and with Imperial and University Colleges in London, where he maintains strong links. |

Clive Hallett
is a chemical metallurgist by training with extensive
international experience in the high temperature and
aqueous processing of minerals. More recently, he has
become involved in the geochemistry of mining wastes and
the selection and design of remedial technologies. Coming from a background in industrial research and corporate and independent consultancy, he has over 27 years experience in the management and progression of research and development projects from concept through to laboratory and pilot scale test work, process design, engineering and commissioning. Over the past ten years he has been a visiting lecturer at Imperial College and TH Delft , presenting courses to earth sciences undergraduates. Wilkinson is a chartered geologist with over 16 years
continuous employment solely within the quarrying
industry. During this time he has worked for RMC (now Cemex) and Tarmac. Along with his MIRO commitments he heads a small team of geologists and geotechnical engineers and provides advice to quarrying companies throughout the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland. His first introduction to MIRO was as Tarmac’s representative on a MIST funded project during 2003/2004 demonstrating the practicalities of a novel hydro-transportation system for aggregates and enhanced washing using ultrasonic technology. He is a fellow of the Geological Society (serving on Council between 2003 and 2006), a member of the Institute of Quarrying and a member of the Irish Mining and Quarrying Society. |
